Taking into account the previous premises, our present reality at school is made of an important human and technical structure for educational purposes.
Virolai is a school which looks for the constant improvement and strives for quality in all its fields. We are committed to offering the best to our students, to their families and to our educators, so that they are all satisfied with the obtained objectives.
Factors such as the exchange and participation of students and teachers in cooperative projects outside the school, the internal and external contrast examinations, the participation and collaboration with the families and their contributions, help us improve our performance to achieve the highest quality grade.
It is an open school, which prepares our students to live in a reality which is in progress in Catalonia, as its nearest surrounding. We are as well participating in European Projects, to be a part of this Europe that we are all building together.
To face the environmental problems of our planet the school needs to educate the future generations in the field of Environmental Education.
This is the reason why Environmental Education is taken as one of the cross-curricular items which must imply the whole educational community and must be worked on through all the areas of life in the school.
Educating our students in the fields of environmental education is a responsibility as educators; it is an investment for the future. They will be a decisive generation to ensure a sustainable development for all men and women in the planet.
The school takes part in Escoles Verdes, which considers the schools in our country working on environmental education in a special way. We also participate in Agenda 21 escolar which gathers the schools in the city of Barcelona that have taken a compromise with environmental education. This project is reinforced thanks to the participation in Projecte APQUA, helping students to understand and verify through experiments the scientific base behind environmental problems, and also developing respect and care for the environment.
School must be the scene for coexistence and learning, stimulating students in participation, cooperative work and solidarity.
Any pedagogical task that we intend to put into practise in this field must start by working on participation and the relationship in the school: the very rules of conduct, the work on respect for pals and the different acts or situations which promote the participation in the school life and coexistence between students of different ages are an example of it.
These values are also worked on by making our students aware of different realities in our city and in our society. Hence, we cooperate with different entities: we also want our students to know about the reality of other countries through speeches and solidarity activities in the UNESCO.
Our Open School Day, during which we open the school to parents, special guests and friends to show our educational activities, are focused on a monographic theme taking into account the International Years. We all remember, amongst others, the International year of the Old people, with its six hours of tales; or the International year of the Culture of Peace, or the year devoted to see the world through the eyes of a child, in which we got to know other cultures and realities, especially from the African continent.
We work on actions that will make our students feel citizens of the world and therefore responsible and supportive with other people and other countries.
In this educational field, our main objective is to create in our students their own criteria about these topics, so as to avoid spontaneous and punctual actions result of “fashion” or just to “clean their consciousness”. We want them to assume that the best way to keep a supportive and cooperative attitude is by means of their effort to learn how to help those around them.
Mastering one or more foreign languages is essential if we want our students to be open to the world. Hence in Virolai we start the learning of English in kindergarten and another foreign language is introduced at the beginning of secondary education. In Virolai we know about the need to increase English in the curriculum and to adapt its learning process to different rhythms and timings. The progressive immersion of our students in the foreign language stretches to other subjects such as Art and Physical Education in primary education and to Science in secondary. Moreover, we take part in programs such as Comenius in Europe and exchanges with English speaking countries.
The knowledge of a foreign language doesn’t only imply the acquisition of some communicative skills but also shows our students the importance of values and customs of other cultures.
Language as the means to access new technologies and further education must be one more key element to help students communicate and become more complete persons.
We prepare our students to succeed in the different Cambridge examinations.
Informatics and technology are two fields in which the continuous change and progress of our society is more evident. In Virolai we are aware that access to new information technologies is the key to the updating of knowledge.
Therefore, not only we use new technology in a daily basis in all our subjects and areas of knowledge, but we also update our means at the same rhythm as new ones appear.
The education of expression skills in our students is a key element to ensure a great development. In Virolai we understand expression from three different views:
For many years we have also worked with the grandparents of our students in a program of oral tradition. Grandparents come and talk to the students: they teach them our traditions, our own history, forgotten jobs, how life was like many years ago, traditional tales...
The Media is a fundamental factor in nowadays society, we cannot avoid media when we talk about education. Hence, we teach the students to analyze and know about the different media: newspapers, magazines, television and radio.
We analyze its contents in order to be able to choose among the different information offered: which ones are more interesting, what is being said and how things are explained. Students also take media as their means to communicate, they put together the school magazine, they participate in some radio programs and they take a subject in 3rd of ESO about media.
